Suruchi and JB live in Scarsdale, New York, about 20 miles north of New York City. Working from a home studio, their artistic journey includes exploration of various subjects, materials, ideas, messages and styles. Prior to moving to New York in the summer of 2016, they lived in Singapore for ten years, where their professional careers progressed alongside their artistic dreams. They have also lived in Kolkata and New Delhi in India. Married for over 25 years, and having brought up their son Dhruva and daughter Tara, they now share their home with their two dogs, Jamun and Kaju. Both enjoy several hobbies including traveling, music, reading, birdwatching and sports. Having lived in three countries - India, Singapore and now in the US, they have been exposed to different cultures and experiences, which often find a way to surface in their art.
Suruchi Tripathi - Ceramic Artist
I have learnt the craft from the best - my earliest teachers were Ambar Agnihotri (India); Johnny Li Sow Mun (Singapore) and Tom Lim (Singapore). I am an artist at Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY where I have learnt from many acclaimed artists.
My creations in clay are a representation of the world around me – nature and human stories. Each creation tells a story and has a range of emotions in it. The narrative is drawn out using a range of techniques that include textures, designs, motifs, shapes and colours.
I work with clay of various kinds, shaping it into decorative pieces, vases and sometimes into useful pots. I use stoneware and porcelain, light and dark clay. I work both on the wheel and build by hand, using slabs and coils and sculptural techniques. My forms are usually symmetrical while the decorations deliberately asymmetrical.
I create pieces which give me joy. And nothing gives me more joy than creating bespoke art for others that fit the occasion, the place or the person.
From conceptualization to creation, each artwork in clay undergoes an adventurous journey with me.
What goes into the fire is a dream. And what emerges is a story.
I work with oil, usually on large format canvases.
My attempt is to make an artistic statement, not reproduce what I see. I believe colors have emotive powers - and in my paintings, the form, the composition and the interplay of colours create emotions. That is the reason I paint.
The uniqueness of my art comes from several facets of my painting style: the usage of bright colors and their transition, the layers and textures, and the cross-hatch application technique using thick paint. The painting process is both simple and complex: it starts with an inspiring form, drawn on canvas - followed by spontaneous coloring that trusts intuition. Later, as I reflect, I make intentional changes that can transform the painting. Not constrained by traditional norms, I incorporate abstract and figurative elements in my paintings, liberating me from the conventional. The net result: refreshing and contemporary art.
With varied interests, my inspiration comes from many sources - from everyday things to cosmic influences, from science to geo-political happenings in the world, from sports to music, from mythology to philosophy. You can see these elements and subjects in my paintings.
